School
Budget Problem. First air date 8-26-07
Presented
by Brad Van Sluyters
School starts right
after Labor Day. Parents are buying back-to-school
clothes; athletes are already practicing; students are
getting their school supplies ... everybody's ready for
the new school year ... except the Michigan Legislature.
Our school systems
can't be expected to do a good job of teaching our
children without proper funding. Yet, Michigan's
school systems still have no idea how much money they
will receive because our legislators haven't gotten
around to finalizing the state's budget. School
superintendents are basing their budgets on the dollars
they received last year, and hoping the legislature
doesn't cut funding ... again. But twice in the
last five years the legislators have cut funding during
the middle of a school year! The situation is
intolerable, but it's something that keeps happening in
Michigan, year after year.
Frankly, our elected
officials simply are not doing their jobs. Many of
these people are good hearted ... some of them are very
nice people ... but that isn't why they were sent to
Lansing. They were sent there to do a job; and
they are not getting a passing grade. Apparently
they hope the voters back home have short memories.
TV6 hopes they are wrong. Forget the election
promises you'll hear next year. Instead, remember
what kind of a job our elected officials did this year
... and vote accordingly.
