The Music
Industry ... Worth hundreds of billions of dollars,
music is the fourth-largest industry in the United
States behind only health, petroleum, and automotive.
In the world, it's the third largest industry.
Think about it. Music is everywhere, pervades
everything, is part of every other industry.
Consider a career in it. You could likely make a
very good living and find work in one or more of music's
many fields.
The music industry almost
certainly is not what you've learned about it to this
point in your life -- mainly because most of the people
in your life who might guide you to it and educate you
about it know very little about it themselves. And
music is not only singing or playing. Not by a
long shot. Singing and playing -- performance --
are the fractions of the industry around which the rest
of the industry revolves. Bet your guidance
counselor never told you that. The music industry
is huge, vast, and varied. Like other large
industries, most of it is behind the scenes -- its reach
and size never occur to you.
So
do your homework about the music industry, learn about
it -- the art, the craft, the science and technology,
the business -- approach people in any and all of the various areas
of it, approach them directly, and, if you like music, consider a healthy
livelihood and a good life in the music industry. <Need
